Do We Really Have to Debate? It’s Just Fishing.

Lately it seems that there have been an extraordinary amount of “lines drawn in the sand” regarding the different tactics that fall under the larger encompassing umbrella of fly fishing – which of course belongs to an even larger scope…..called just FISHING.   Lately I’ve seen streamer fishermen blast non streamer fishermen, I’ve seen swing fishermen blast non swing fishermen, I’ve seen indicators draw substantial amounts of disparagement, it goes on and on.

It seems to me that often times these proclamations and assertions are often times made to:

  1. Establish one’s own relevance in a particular community
  2. Create some fashion of social segregation amongst anglers that utilize the different methods
  3. Push an individual’s agenda – perhaps a marketing propaganda campaign
  4. Just someone being a straight up peckerhead

To me the most disconcerting element of this type of behavior, is often times it is done under the guise of “progression”.  I get it, we aren’t cavemen and we should always be evolving and adapting.  However, just because someone uses an indicator or decides to swing a spey rod instead of pulling streamers, should they be left to feel bad about it?  Should they have to fear suffering degradation either in person or over social media just because they utilized a method that was not seen by some people as “sporting” or difficult?  At the end of the day, shouldn’t only a couple of things matter?  Things like:

  1. Was the method used legal and ethical?  Ethical is a tricky situation, I can totally understand how there is a lot left up to interpretation and that is probably a different dicussion for a different time.
  2. Did the person respect the resource?
  3. Was he/she being respectful to other anglers?
  4. Did they enjoy their time?

This year my wife began to take more interest in fly fishing – something she previously had ZERO ambition to put any effort towards.

Why is it that I HAVE TO explain to her that it’s okay that she uses an indicator when she fishes, even though she read online that it should be outlawed?  Why should I have to explain to her that pulling streamers is not the only way, as a matter of fact it might be one of the least effective ways, of catching fish?

My professional life is spent working in Human Resources, as a result throughout my years spent in corporate life I have come to understand there are really 2 types of people in any work environment.  Those that want the company to succeed, therefore furthering their own success or those that are only looking out for themselves.  Pretty easy to figure out which environment is better to be a part of.  None the less, it’s not surprising that by lifting everyone up around you, you also have additional opportunities for ascension.

Why is it that so many of us in this sport/industry work so hard to push our own personal agendas and mock folks that utilize methods different than our own, often times creating social divides?  Instead of putting forth that same effort towards promoting the sport/industry in its entirety?  At the end of the day, we are all suffering as a result of it.

Fishing can be so many different things to different people.  There was a time for me that it was about going out and catching a bunch of fish, then it became going out and catching the biggest fish.  Now for me, its about going out and having a great day with some pals and enjoying the unbelievable resource that are available to us – thats been my progression.  You can be a bait, swing, steamer, indicator, or whatever fisherman – I say “GOOD FOR YOU! It’s awesome you’re out here doing this!”  I don’t care why you or anyone else is in it – at the end of the day, it’s just fishing.

  1. I think a lot of it is number 4. People just have to beat their chest and proclaim that their way is better than anyone else and anyone who says differently is, in their eye, an idiot. My preferred method for Steelhead fishing is Swinging flies. I get a lot of dirty looks from pluggers and the center pin people when I am out. Why, I have no idea. I’m just another fisherman trying to enjoy himself. Yes plugging and using a center pin is more effective but for me it’s not about the numbers. Can’t I just fish the way I want without being judged?

I won’t even go into the whole C&R vs. Keep debate. Oh Lord can that get ugly.

I think its a lot of #2 and #4 in your first paragraph.
There a lot of people out there that want to make their name for themselves at the cost of many others good name and in the mean time become big time pricks.
I don’t buy something because your name is attached to it that stuff is nothing more than hype you haven’t created some new line, head or tying products its been around or played out in years past you just brought it back with some new name or your name attached to it! I also don’t don’t care how you fish as long as its legal but what I do care for more than anything else is respect peoples choices on how they do choose to fish!
I think if we as a fishing community can all ban together and quit this stupid infighting and focus on the bigger issues to make it better for us and generations to come we would be much better off.

  5. Denis Dauphinee I recommend that we fly fishers leave the elitism to the those who purchase large tracks of land and then think they own the river that runs through it. If some of us feel the need (for whatever reason) to be elitist, let’s just focus on the bait fishermen.
