Tesla Unveils 7-Seater Model Y

Speaking at the launch of the vehicle, the 47-year-old said: 'It has the functionality of an SUV, but it will ride like a sports auto. This will allow for plenty of room to build the two vehicles.

Another important tip with the Model Y is that Tesla will release each Model Y auto at a different time. That did adjust the pricing, but still today Tesla is selling a $5,000 package that is mostly hope and dreams. With about the same parking footprint-perhaps a few inches longer, as Tesla can't yet confirm the final dimensions-the Model Y offers what we noted to be a relatively roomy interior, with a slightly higher seating height and plenty of headroom.

The second Model-Y variant is the Long Range Rear Wheel Drive, which has a $49,000 price tag. "Will some potential M3 buyers wait?" It's expected to launch in 2021 and will have a headline price of just $39,000. This vehicle has a range of 320 miles, accelerates to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and can go as fast as 130 mph. With the capability of accelerating from 0-60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds, the price of this version is $47,000. The acceleration from 0-60 miles per hour will take 4.8 seconds and the version can achieve a top speed of 135 miles per hour.

The Dual Motor AWD and Performance versions of the Model Y can both achieve 280 miles.

The performance vehicle with 280 miles range and 150 miles per hour and 3.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph will start at $60,000 and both AWD and performance option are slated for fall 2020.

Model Y Standard Battery will have 230 miles of range, while Model Y Long Range will be able to travel up to 300 miles on a single charge. It's taller, and it has more cargo space, and even the option of seven seats instead of the usual five, but is it an "SUV"?

The analysts also anticipate the Model Y not meeting its late 2020 delivery goal, "given historically poor execution and the lack of detail at the event on manufacturing location". It indicates no rush to get the Model Y out the door in order to firm up Tesla vehicle demand or to provide a hedge in the case of a Model 3 demand drought. The rest of the cabin layout is similar to what Tesla is skilful in bringing for its customers.

Not only has Tesla given no indication that it would produce the Model Y in Fremont (saying, on the contrary, that the crossover will probably be produced in Gigafactory 1 in the US), but the news from last night is that the Model Y won't be produced until late next year.

"Twelve months from now we will have made about one million vehicles", Musk said at the event, without specifying the breakdown of models.

Tesla has enjoyed little competition thus far for its sedans, but competition for electric SUVs is heating up as Tesla tries to master a new set of economics from the luxury line that made its reputation. He added that he believes the Model Y could account for up to 20% of Tesla's total sales within the next three years and could ultimately boost the company's financial performance.

Model Y from the rear.

Tesla's new crossover SUV could be just the spark the company needs to get to the next level, according to one analyst. However, it also posted a loss of $1 billion throughout the same year.

At the risk of sounding cynical, I couldn't help but wonder how many early adopters of the Model 3 are going to go out and buy the Model Y as a replacement.

Let's see if Tesla fulfills its promise of the production deadline this time over.

The 2020 Tesla Model Y that debuted Thursday night is the electric-car builder's most mainstream model yet.

That's it from our side for now.

The Model Y will initially only be offered in the "long-range" configuration.
