California's death row is crowded with inmates, many of whom have been there for decades.

"I'm disgusted by the justice system", said Maria Keever, whose 13-year-old son Charlie Keever was murdered along with his friend Jonathan Seller, 9, in 1993 by death row inmate Scott Erskine.

He said he's considering commuting death sentences as "a next step" once state Supreme Court justices explain why they blocked several non-death commutations sought by former Gov.

"A little of me died", said Klaas, a death penalty supporter.

But Newsom's action angered death penalty proponents.

"Our death penalty system has been - by any measure - a failure", Newsom plans to say in his remarks.

Newsom says his views on the death penalty were shaped 40 years ago through his grandfather's and father's advocacy on behalf of a wrongfully convicted man.

Newsom's declaration also included an order to close the execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison and the withdrawal of a new execution protocol.

Those protocols have been laboriously hammered out and subject to a sustained legal challenge.

California last executed someone in 2006, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was governor.

Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump supports the death penalty. Twenty-six inmates condemned to death have committed suicide since the death penalty was reintroduced in 1978. Though voters in 2016 narrowly approved a ballot measure to speed up the punishment, no condemned inmate faced imminent execution. Most of all, the death penalty is absolute. The margin of error was 6.5 percent.

Critics accused Newsom of usurping voters' will.

Lionel Messi shines but Cristiano Ronaldo is Champions League king
The 34-year-old scored all three goals in his side's 3-0 win over Atletico to eliminate the Rojiblancos 3-2 on aggregate. Speaking to Marca , Maradona said: "Us Argentineans are proud of Messi but Ronaldo is an animal".

The governor is meant to sign the new order later on Wednesday. "I don't believe we do".

The local impact is unclear.

Shilpi Agarwal, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union, told the Times that a moratorium in California was key to that effort. He said he saw his own brother face the death penalty in Fresno County. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection in 2005. However, in an agreement with prosecutors, he agreed to plead guilty before trial and get a sentence of life without parole in prison.

Though capital punishment hasn't violated the law in California, the state hasn't executed any prisoner since January 2006. "Thanks Governor. And thanks to all who fought for this". "These are people that families are expecting some semblance of justice". California would have to execute one inmate each day for more than two years to empty death row, he noted.

In 2003, gang member Adrian Camacho shot and killed Oceanside police Officer Tony Zeppetella during a routine traffic stop. CA has the largest death row in the country.

"If you rape, we don't rape", he said. He's going to remain in custody. Jerry Brown that did not involve condemned inmates.

The state joins Colorado, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, which have similar bans, and 20 states that have abolished the death penalty, it said.

"The data shows it doesn't work, It is discriminatory, it costs tons of money and innocent people are convicted", said Eric Quandt, the SF Deputy Public Defender.

"I think he's trying to begin a conversation on ways in which the death penalty is deeply flawed", she said. "It has discriminated against defendants who are mentally ill, black and brown, or can't afford expensive legal representation".

The new governor of California yesterday suspended executions indefinitely in the state, which has more than twice as many prisoners on death row as any other.

"Those are the countries - those last five - that join the USA in executing more of their citizens than any other nations on Planet Earth".
