The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning north of a line from St. James to Faribault from 9 a.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday.

In addition, southeasterly winds will strengthen late Saturday night into Sunday morning with wind gusts between 46 and 57 miles per hour.

In her forecast after the RTÉ news, Met Éireann meteorologist Jeanne Byrne said the wintery weather would last through Saturday night and Sunday.

Before the changeover to rain, roads could be slippery, the weather service warned: "Expect slippery roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving".

The Met Office's Becky Mitchell said: "It is going to turn colder towards the end of the week and this cold air will stay with us, particularly in the north, into the middle of the month".

The active weather returns by mid week with another system bring more rain, wind and thunder. Numerous showers will be heavy and wintry in nature with a mix of rain, hail, sleet and snow and scattered thunderstorms. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees with moderate to fresh westerly winds.
