U.S. Closes Jerusalem Consulate, Causing Concern Among Palestinians and Their Advocates

The United States has officially shuttered its consulate in Jerusalem, downgrading the status of its main diplomatic mission to the Palestinians by folding it into the U.S. Embassy to Israel.

State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said the decision was driven by operational efficiency and there would be "complete continuity of USA diplomatic activity and consular services".

Since the move last May, Palestinian leadership in Ramallah has rejected any mediating role by the U.S.in the moribund Middle East peace process.

"The attempts to merge the United States consulate with the embassy is a contradiction of worldwide law and specifically UN Security Council resolution 478 (one of several UN resolutions condemning Israel's attempted annexation of East Jerusalem) of 1980", said Issa.

Wisma Putra said the move would sound the death knell of the two-state solution that enjoyed the support of the vast majority of the worldwide community.

The Palestinians slammed Israeli army after two Palestinians were killed and one injured earlier Monday morning by Israeli soldiers' gunfire, demanding holding Israel accountable. The consulate, according to Fox News, had served as a de facto embassy for the Palestinian Arabs; the duties handled by the consulate will now be transferred to the embassy.

When first announced by U.S. Secretary Mike Pompeo in October, the move infuriated Palestinians, fueling their suspicions that the U.S. was recognizing Israeli control over east Jerusalem and the West Bank, territories that Palestinians seek for a future state. Spates of ramming attacks and stabbings by Palestinians against Israeli security forces and civilians peaked in late 2015 and 2016.

Attacks have continued as the Israeli occupation continues, settlement enterprise continues to expand, and US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
