More than 10,000 reports were logged on DownDetector between noon and 2 p.m. (ET). A subsequent tweet adds, "Our engineers are actively investigating and working on the issues outlined in our initial post". "We'll have additional updates to provide soon".

It was unclear at the time what was causing these issues, but a quick look on Twitter showed that the problems were affecting a large number of players. Microsoft said it was aware of the reports and it was working on the problem.
