Who Is Cory Booker? | 2020 Presidential Candidate

Cory Booker on Friday declared his bid for the presidency in 2020 with a sweeping call to unite a deeply polarized nation around a "common goal".

Conway attacked Booker after Fox News' Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked her to comment on the Trump administration's reaction to Booker's announcement that morning. Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand and Kamala Harris announced presidential plans, most Democratic strategists and officials consider Booker a top-tier contender who has spent months building relationships and laying organizational groundwork in the early voting states.

"I believe that we can build a country where no one is forgotten, no one is left behind", he said in a video on his website. McCain interjected by saying that SNL parodies tend to become a reality, emphasizing their parody of her father's former 2008 presidential running mate Sarah Palin: "there's a power in that as well". Conway, a fellow New Jersey native, suggested he didn't have much of a record from his time serving in the US Senate - he was sworn in in 2013 - and as Newark mayor, a position he held for eight years.

At a rally last October, Mr Trump said Mr Booker "did one of the worst jobs of any mayor" and "destroyed what he did, he was so bad".

"We're not defined by a president who does not believe women", he said.

"Together America, we will rise", he says, reprising a line he deployed successfully at the 2016 Democratic National Convention to raucous cheers. Bernie Sanders is also mulling a presidential bid.

In addition to questions over style there are, perhaps more seriously, others over substance, specifically Mr Booker's ties to Wall Street and the pharmaceutical industry.

Building on themes of community and sacrifice, he notes in his campaign video that he is the only senator who lives in a low-income, inner-city neighbourhood.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) speaks during the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. His age is not all that sets him apart: Booker is unmarried and vegan, two unique qualities among the emerging Democratic field. But he has also emerged as a passionate interrogator of President Donald Trump's nominees - including Justice Brett Kavanaugh, at whose confirmation hearing Booker memorably unloaded in a heated "Spartacus moment".

It also comes across as a subtle warning to him not to run as a progressive.

With an elite law degree in hand, Booker bypassed more lucrative opportunities and moved into an affordable housing complex in one of Newark's poorest neighborhoods, planning to lend his skills to a nonprofit.
