DeSantis suspends Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel

Florida Governor Rick Scott, (R), and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, (L), speak to the media on February 15, 2018 about the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people were killed.

"This was about politics, not Parkland", Israel said. "I served the county honorably and I will continue to do that". DeSantis cited a list of failures enumerated by a state panel that investigated BSO's response to the February 14, 2018, shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

The governor's executive order [PDF] excoriates Israel not just over the horrific Parkland shooting, but for similar failures and lack of leadership regarding the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting in 2017.

Another major change DeSantis included in his order puts a priority on the construction of a reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee to help filter agricultural runoff.

Much of the perceived faults of the Broward Sheriff's Office were outlined in the lengthy Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission report submitted to the governor's office last week.

Under Florida law, DeSantis has the right to suspend election officials accused of "criminal activity, misfeasance, incompetence or neglect of duty", according to ABC News.

The Republican governor made the announcement at Broward County Sheriff's headquarters in Fort Lauderdale with some survivors of the Parkland shooting behind him.

It was not clear what a compromise might entail, and there were no indications that one was in the offing. Visiting a border patrol station in McAllen, Trump viewed tables piled with weapons and narcotics.

Israel said DeSantis vowed to remove him as sheriff when he was campaigning for governor.

Commission members also grilled Israel over BSO's policy for deputies dealing with an active shooter. The report also said former Deputy Scot Peterson, the school resource officer, was "derelict in his duty" and "failed to act consistent with his training and fled to a position of personal safety" during the mass shooting.

Israel said then he would not resign.

"Sheriff Israel has received no official word from the governor or his office of the objective of this visit".

"I think BSO needs a different leader", said Debbie Hixon whose husband Chris was killed in the MSD massacre.

"One more second and she makes it", Guttenberg said.

Tony tried to reassure sheriff's office employees, the families and the community as he takes over a troubled agency with 5,000 employees and 3,000 deputies.

You know the Stoneman Douglas Commission when they were talking to deputies they learned from these deputies that the deputies could not remember the last time that they had active shooter training or what kind of training it was. DeSantis tweeted Friday that the suspension was over Israel's "repeated failures, incompetence and neglect of duty".
