More than 3.5 years after launch, Windows 10 has finally pulled ahead of Windows 7 in terms of overall popularity. The company announced that starting with Windows 10 Preview Build 18309 certain versions of the operating system (Pro, Enterprise, and Education) won't have Cortana walk people through that setup process.

If you recently picked up a new Windows 10 device or performed a clean install of the OS, you were probably greeted by Cortana during the setup experience. In addition to some under the hood changes and improvements, Microsoft is pushing for a password-less sign-on experience for all Windows 10 versions starting with this build. Microsoft had been testing the feature on Windows 10 Home specifically, but it made a decision to port it over to all other iterations as well.

The other important factor here is that Microsoft's extended support window for Windows 7 closes on January 14th, 2020 - just over a year from now.

For one, Microsoft has disabled Cortana's voice-over instructions during the installation phase, based on user feedback. You can associate your iOS or Android phone number with your Microsoft account, you can use an SMS code to sign in. The tech giant has since introduced the Authenticator app, which allows users to log into their Microsoft account on their desktop using their phone.

Lock your device and choose the phone number account from the sign-in screen. We don't know the exact number of devices running Windows 10, but we do know that it's more than 700 million.

One caveat is that users will need a Microsoft account for this to work, but it's fairly easy to create one.

Build 18309 also includes some Narrator improvements, including the ability to download additional voices in other languages without having to download language packs (got to Narrator Settings and select "Add more voices").

Also on the ease of access front, Microsoft has added 11 new mouse pointer sizes under Cursor and Pointers settings, to make for 15 choices in total. Windows 10 October 2018 Update has entered the new year with two new issues. The market share in December 2018 39.22 percent, while the apparently still very popular Windows 7 36.9 percent Martkanteil reserves.
