Hopman Cup 2019: Serena Williams dedicates year to working parents

The 23-time grand slam victor lost to her sister Venus Williams in an exhibition match last week, and arrives at the Hopman Cup as a major drawcard.

Roger Federer took the honours in the much-anticipated mixed doubles clash with fellow great Serena Williams in what the latter described as the "match of her career" at the Hopman Cup in Perth Tuesday.

"I admire everything she has done both on and off the court", Federer said. Thanks for making this match possible. "I was like, 'Oh, my God, this is so cool.' So it's just something that, as a player, is something that you would dream of, to play Roger Federer".

Williams and Federer served strongly and were unable to return any of each other's serves in the first set.

Federer made an impressive start in preparation for his Australian Open title defense with a seemingly effortless 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cameron Norrie on Sunday.

"She's a great champion, you see how focused she is and I love that about her".

Before the match Williams had talked of wanting a selfie with Federer post match and the pair had their special moment after the game, posing together on the court with a selfie-stick.

Tackle Cedric Ogbuehi, the 2014 first-round pick, probably ended his Bengals career with his 14 deactivation of the season. As it turns out though, it was his own decision to miss practice.

Federer and Bencic took the first set 4-2 and won 4-3 in the second after a 5-3 tie-break victory.

When asked if he meant she was the greatest female tennis player of all time, Federer clarified that he meant the greatest "overall".

Williams will take on Belinda Bencic in the women's singles rubber. "She is one of the biggest champions in our sport ever, men and women combined, so it is great to be playing against her".

Defeat left six-time winners U.S. at the bottom of the group ahead of Tuesday's meeting with holders Switzerland, who thumped Britain on Sunday. He discovered his groove by dominating Norrie's serve and broke in the second game with a powerful cross-court backhand victor.

"I've been looking forward to it since I saw it", Williams said, per the Times.

Earlier in the night, Williams raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set of her singles match, but Bencic won six of the next seven games to put her 37-year-old opponent on the back foot. Federer has lost just seven games in his first two matches of the round-robin tournament.

"I always feel like I'm at home when I'm in Australia", Tsitsipas said.
