6 injured after jet bridge 'equipment failure' at Baltimore airport, officials say

Just before 8 p.m. on Saturday, Southwest flight 822 arrived at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) from the Dominican Republic.

An airbridge is the enclosed, movable passageway between the terminal and an aircraft, permitting passengers to board and deplane.

Multiple emergency services personnel responded to the scene, transporting at least six people to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

"The next thing you know, there was a crash", the Baltimore Sun quoted one passenger, Kelsey Traub, 20, as saying.

While medics were helping the passenger outside the plane, the jet bridge experienced a failure, Southwest Airlines said.

The statement says 33 jet bridges made by the manufacturer were inspected and deemed safe to use. Afterward, the people on the flight remained "pretty calm", she added.

The jet bridge failure is "under investigation", according to another tweet from the airport. A spokesman for Southwest said the jet bridge is owned by BWI.

The airport says the plane has been moved and there have been no further impacts to airport operations.
