The outage began Thursday, but it affected more than just Internet customers because many US businesses and even some regular folks, including many in Nebraska, have switched to voice-over-Internet-protocol phone systems that rely on the Internet to transmit business calls.

"Its breadth and duration are particularly troubling", he said.

An outage at CenturyLink has affected 911 calling capability in various towns across Massachusetts, according to a statement from the Massachusetts State Police.

The 911 dispatch center and emergency management in western Missouri's Johnson County were hit by the outage, county Emergency Management Director Troy Armstrong said Friday.

"Where CenturyLink is the 911 service provider 911 calls are completing", the company said in a tweet.
