Trump has found a replacement for UN Ambassador Nikki Haley

US President Donald Trump is set to announce state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as his new ambassador to the United Nations, US media report.

Nauert's nomination had been rumoured for weeks, and she had started handing over some of her responsibilities as spokeswoman to her deputy, Robert Palladino. Nauert is now the spokeswoman for the State Department.

Plucked from Fox by the White House to serve as State Department spokeswoman, Nauert catapulted into the upper echelons of the agency's hierarchy when Tillerson was sacked in March and replaced with Mike Pompeo.

Nauert has been on the short list for ambassador to the United Nations since Haley announced that she was stepping down from her post in October.

Nuart was brought on to the administration after providing commentary on "Fox and Friends" on what appears to be Trump's favorite cable news network. She will have to be confirmed by the Senate to become ambassador to the United Nations.

It and the tsunami it triggered claimed about 130 lives. "People who were outside were actively hugging each other", he said. A tsunami warning was issued for the Cook Inlet and the Kenai Peninsula following the massive quake but was quickly lifted.

Nauert became the state department spokeswoman in April 2017 and this year was named the acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs. If Nauert is confirmed by the Senate, she would be a leading administration voice on Trump's foreign policy.

It was reported in November that Nauert had been offered the job, but it was not clear at the time whether she had accepted.

That role gave her responsibilities far beyond the news conferences she held in the State Department briefing room. She hadn't specialized in foreign policy or worldwide relations. She met with Trump at the end of October, fueling speculation that she had emerged as the president's top choice for the role.

Fox News said Mr Trump would tweet about the appointment on Friday morning, while Bloomberg said it had been told of the decision to appoint Ms Nauert by three sources.

The post is considered one of the highest profile positions in USA diplomacy.
