For example, the new Carrera S (the first model to go on sale), produces an extra 30bhp, taking it up to 444bhp and cutting the 0-62mph time from 4.1sec to 3.7sec in the rear-wheel-drive PDK vehicle, and from 4.3sec to 3.6sec in four-wheel-drive guise. Combined with a new 8-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, Porsche is claiming a 0-100 km/h sprint of 3.5 seconds for the 2S, 3.4 for the 4S and 3.3 and 3.2 seconds, respectively, when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, on to a top speed of 191 miles per hour. The automaker says efficiency has been increased thanks to an improved injection process and a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system. The new auto might look similar to the outgoing model, too, but it's 1.73 inches wider and about an inch longer than the outgoing model, despite having the same wheelbase. Cars with the optional Sport Chrono package are even quicker, with 0-to-60 times dropping to 3.3 seconds in the Carrera S and 3.2 seconds in the Carrera 4S.

Everyone will recognize the 911 as being a Porsche, with its fried-egg headlights (now LED) and sloped recess in the hood. 20-inch wheels are available up front, while rear wheels increase to 21 inches. The easiest way to tell the difference is by the single, thin light bar that stretches right across the rear.

The eighth-generation model carries top billing at this week's LA motor show and features revised engines, an upgraded interior and greater efficiency - all wrapped up in a design that looks nearly exactly like the old one.

In addition, the next generation of its turbocharged 3,0-litre flat-six engines have been "further developed" to produce more oomph in the S models. Apart from the front and rear fascias, the body panels are now entirely made from aluminium. The shifter is smaller and more of a stalk than a large handle.

There are some details that are not necessary to be so classic, but we did this deliberately because we think it evokes a joy of use for every day in a sports vehicle. The dashboard features a more angular design and comes with a new multi-function steering wheel equipped with the sports response rotary dial, allowing the driver to alter the car's drive modes. "Others don't choose to do this, but we choose to do it".

Both 911 models can accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour in under four seconds: the rear-wheel-drive Coupé can achieve this benchmark in 3.7 seconds and the 911 Carrera 4S with all-wheel drive in 3.6 seconds.

The importance of the 911 can not be overestimated. About 1,400 of the 8,200 cars and SUVs that Porsche sold a year ago were 911s, which now start at $104,000 and rise to more than a quarter-million dollars.

While the 992 911 is larger in every vital dimension, Porsche has only confirmed that the front track is 45mm wider and that it has a slightly longer wheelbase for improved interior and drivetrain packaging.
