Everyone's Joking About 'Individual 1' After Cohen's Plea Agreement

Cohen made a surprise appearance in federal court in lower Manhattan Thursday morning, where he entered his plea as part of a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller in the ongoing federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election.

"He is lying about a project that everybody knew about", Trump told reporters at the White House before jetting off to the G20 summit in Argentina.

"Michael Cohen is lying and he's trying to get a reduced sentence", Trump said.

"That was a project that we didn't do, I didn't do".

He said at the hearing that he had submitted a false written statement about a Trump Organization plan to build a skyscraper bearing Mr Trump's name in the Russian capital. In Cohen's now-discredited testimony, he told lawmakers that he made the decision to terminate the deal on his own without consulting with Trump or any members of the Trump family.

Adam Schiff, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, said there was a "counterintelligence imperative" for its members, in the new Congress, to continue to probe the Trump Organization's financial links to Russian Federation.

Cohen also "agreed to travel to Russian Federation in connection with the Moscow Project and took steps in contemplation of Individual l ' s possible travel to Russian Federation".

Cohen waived his right to an indictment when he appeared in a NY federal court. Some of those contacts were first reported by The Washington Post.

As part of this deal, Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress regarding a Trump Tower project in Moscow. He previously identified individual one as Trump.

"Cohen discussed the status and progress of the Moscow Project with Individual 1 on more than the three occasions Cohen claimed to the [congressional] committee", the court filing says. The search does not appear to be directly related to Mr. Mueller's investigation, but likely resulted from information he had uncovered and gave to prosecutors in NY.

Putin defends 'lawful' seizure of Ukrainian ships
Poroshenko said it was necessary because of intelligence about "a highly serious threat of a ground operation against Ukraine". The strait is the only route for ships traveling between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, where Ukraine has several ports.

It also references "Individual 1" in the context of winning the nomination ahead of the 2016 election.

Cohen admitted Thursday he made the false statements about the project to be "consistent" with the president's "political message". Both sides agreed they would not ask for a sentence outside of those range, provided Cohen continues to cooperate.

Cohen's guilty plea could add pressure on Trump as the Russian Federation probe deepens. He said sentencing in the case is scheduled for December 12.

That retaliation could include releasing "devastating" documents about how the Justice Department operated, he said.

He implicated the president in his campaign finance violations, telling a NY judge that he committed his crimes "in coordination with and at the direction of a federal candidate for office", a clear reference to Trump.

In August, Manafort was convicted on eight charges involving tax fraud, bank fraud and hiding foreign bank accounts.

Trump has increasingly been lashing out at the Mueller investigation, calling it an "illegal Joseph McCarthy style Witch Hunt" that has "shattered so many innocent lives".

President Trump was not directly accused of doing anything wrong.

Trump has sought to distance himself from Cohen despite their long association.

Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. have admitted that campaign leaders went into the meeting expecting material that would be useful against the Democratic presidential nominee but said that this is common practice in politics and that nothing came from it.
