The dead were found in burned-out cars, in the smoldering ruins of their homes, or next to their vehicles, apparently overcome by smoke and flames before they could jump in behind the wheel and escape.

To the south, Woolsey Fire has blackened almost 94,000 acres and was also 30 percent contained as of Monday night, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire). The devastating Woolsey Fire has destroyed hundreds of homes and killed at least two people, and the Hill Fire has scorched thousands of acres nearby.

The remains of 13 more victims of the Camp Fire were discovered Monday, bringing the death toll to 42.

The fires have spread with an erratic intensity that has strained firefighting resources while catching many residents by surprise.

The "Woolsey Fire", which also began on Thursday, has razed 37,900 hectares including the 100-year-old Paramount Ranch where HBO's "Westworld" and other popular television shows and movies were filmed. At least two people have died in that fire, according to officials from the statewide agency Cal Fire. It broke out south of the Camp Fire in Ventura County.

The president previously threatened to withhold federal payments if California didn't fix the "gross mismanagement" of forests. Officials say the number of victims is expected to rise, as 200 people are still unaccounted for, and the largest fires are only partially contained.
