The 27-year-old Navy veteran was among at least several survivors of last year's Las Vegas massacre who were at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks when a gunman stormed in and killed 12 people late Wednesday.

New details surrounding the Thousand Oaks shooting that left twelve people dead reveal that it was possibly a revenge killing for Ian David Long.

At a press conference, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said Helus called his wife and said he had a call to handle, and told her he loved her before running into the incident at the bar.

Officials said Long, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, used a legally purchased.45-caliber handgun outfitted with an extended magazine and deployed a smoke device during the attack.

By the time it was over, 12 people were dead, and gunman Ian David Long was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities haven't identified what motivated Long to open fire during college night at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, around 40 miles (64 kilometres) from downtown Los Angeles.

"I literally feared for myself around him", Colell said in an interview Friday.

A reporter then pointed to blood on his sleeve, which he said "isn't mine" and came from a man with a chest wound who they helped drag over to paramedics.

Todd Stratton, who was at the bar with two friends who died, said he was in "disbelief" because he's known Long for years.

"I've been here fighting for him all morning long - and we did just get the news that he was one of the [people] killed last night".

About 18 months ago, Don and Effie MacLeod heard "an very bad argument" and what he believes was a gunshot from the Longs' property.

President Trump today branded Long a "sick puppy" and insisted he had increased funding to mental health causes to try and treat those living with PTSD. "I don't know whose phone it is, '" Colell recounted.

California already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, but on Thursday, governor-elect Gavin Newsom promised he "will raise the bar" on gun control when he takes over in January.

"Every Marine is trained in urban warfare and indoor gun fighting", said Marc Bender, an instructor for emergency responders in Riverside County, California.

Investigators have not commented on whether mental illness played a role in the rampage. "When (he) started to reload, that's when we got people out of there and I didn't look back", he said.

"But I knew it was real so I just pulled him down". "He was the only athlete that I was scared of". But people who knew him before deployment said he had displayed aggressive behavior previously.

Colell said Long was "the only student that I was actually scared of when I coached there".
