Walking in the front, Rahul Gandhi led hundreds of people who shouted slogans and carried placards and posters that criticised the government. The Central Vigilance Commission said it had attempted to look into allegations against Verma but he didn't cooperate. Laloo had then taken a rickshaw from the CM's bungalow to the nearby CBI office in an apparent show of strength, but Asthana and his team held their nerves.

It directed that interim CBI chief M Nageswara Rao shall not take any major policy decisions.

Asthana apparently made many enemies during his first CBI stint, but his role in the fodder scam, which cost Laloo the chief ministership, also endeared him to those on the other side of the political spectrum.

The imbroglio in the CBI is unlikely to end soon.

Accusing the government of interfering into investigations, Verma has said there was a need for an independent probe agency as there were bound to be occasions when certain investigations into high functionaries do not take the direction that may be desirable to the government.

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah took to Twitter to target the prime minister over the CBI issue.

But his petition was not heard on Friday and will be entertained in due course. It came amid a tussle between Verma and the agency's Special Director Rakesh Asthana.

At a press conference on Thursday, Rahul Gandhi had alleged that the Prime Minister's move to remove the CBI chief at 2 in the middle of the night was a "panic reaction" after he learnt that Verma was ordering a CBI probe into the corruption in the Rafale deal.

Jaitley told mediapersons that the allegations that were being levelled by Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana had led to a "bizarre and unfortunate" situation.

The government said the CVC passed orders divesting Verma and Asthana of all powers after considering "the extraordinary and unprecedented circumstances". The section also mandates the appointment of a CBI Director by a high powered panel of the PM, LoP and CJI.

"This has been done as an interim measure and will subsist till the CVC concludes its inquiry into all issues which have given rise to the present extra-ordinary and unprecedented situation and till the CVC and/or Government of India takes an appropriate decision in accordance with the law as regards the measures to be adopted as a effect thereof", the statement said.

On Tuesday, the CBI suspended its DSP and an aide of Asthana, Devender Kumar, who was arrested on Monday on the charge of falsification of records while probing allegations against meat exporter Moin Qureshi.
