Trump emphasised Riyadh's importance in countering regional rival Iran and the importance for American jobs of massive United States arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Two weeks after Khashoggi's disappearance, he posted a tweet apparently responding to widespread accusations that he was the mastermind of Khashoggi's killing. "We don't blame anyone in advance, but we do not consent to this being covered up", said the ruling party spokesman, Omar Celik, according to the semiofficial Anadolu news agency. "I am going to go there and meet with my counterparts and continue to focus on what's in the Treasury's domain, as it relates to this issue".

Erdogan's government has so far refused to publicly share that evidence, possibly to protect Turkish surveillance methods but also, analysts said, to preserve a measure of leverage over the Saudis and the Trump administration, which has tried to protect its Saudi allies.

Three major European powers - Germany, Britain and France - pressed Saudi Arabia to provide facts to back up its earlier explanation of a fight, while Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany would not export arms to Saudi Arabia while the current uncertainty over Khashoggi's fate persisted.

The kingdom also said that five top Saudi intelligence officials had been fired and 18 others arrested as a result of its investigation into the matter.

However, in a conflicting report, an unidentified official told Reuters on Sunday that a team of 15 agents had acted without Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's authorisation to kidnap the journalist.

"I'm not calling for the overthrow of the regime", the one-time royal insider said.

'And so, we've got to figure out a way to have a nuanced response to this situation. "That is not the focus of my trip".

Turkish media outlets have reported that the authorities here have audio tapes in which Khashoggi's alleged killers tortured him by cutting his fingers off before his decapitation.

Needless to say, no one really believes that's what happened to Khashoggi.

He said in Arizona that he would work with Congress on next moves, but "I would prefer that we don't use as retribution cancelling $110 billion worth of work, which means 600,000 jobs. we need them as a counterbalance to Iran".

"First we were told Mr. Khashoggi supposedly left the consulate and there was blanket denial of any Saudi involvement", Graham, R-S.C., tweeted Friday.

In a February 2018 column in The Washington Post, Khashoggi mentioned Qahtani as the chief promulgator of a Saudi "blacklist" for critics of the government, and suggested that Khashoggi was among those blacklisted.

The efforts to attack Khashoggi and other influential Saudis, and sway public opinion against them on the social media service, included a so-called troll farm based in Riyadh and a suspected spy within Twitter that the kingdom utilized to monitor user accounts, the New York Times reported. Eighteen Saudi nationals had been arrested, the prosecutor said in a statement.
