Acute flaccid myelitis is a rare condition that affects a person's nervous system, specifically the spinal cord, according to the CDC. In the case of the Batavia child, doctors say Julia Payne contracted what's known as an enterovirus and that was the cause of her AFM.

The children live in King, Pierce, Lewis, Snohomish and Skagit counties.

AMF is not a new condition, but the increase in cases starting in 2014 is not normal, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC said from August 2014 through August 2018, the CDC has received information on a total of 362 cases of AFM across the USA. Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist Mark Hicar said driving the auto is more of a danger than catching AFM. Most of the cases that CDC has learned about have been in children. Symptoms typically include sudden weakness in one or more arms or legs, along with loss of muscle tone and decreased or absent reflexes.

At this point there isnt evidence that would point to a single source of illness among these cases, said Dr. Scott Lindquist, state infectious disease epidemiologist at the Department of Health.

Saudi Arabia government pledges ‘greater action’ if USA retaliates for Khashoggi disappearance
Trump tweeted early Monday that Salman denied any knowledge of "whatever may have happened 'to our Saudi Arabian citizen'". A spokesman for JPMorgan confirmed chief executive Jamie Dimon will no longer attend, but declined to say why.

"Surveillance has shown us that AFM cases generally peak in the months of September and October", the Nevada state health department said in a bulletin sent to healthcare providers in August.

The CDC says that both the cause and long-term effects of the disease remain unknown. Another preventative measure is protecting oneself from mosquito bites, which can carry West Nile virus, by using repellent, reducing outdoor time at dusk and dawn and removing areas of standing or stagnant water.

Health officials will never have a firm count of cases of AFM because not all states require doctors to report them.

In 2016 there was a cluster of nine cases of AFM case in Washington state. "All but one of the Texas cases are children". So far this year, there have been 38 cases in 16 states, the CDC says.

Most of the reported AMF cases continue to occur in children.
