Cabinet ministers briefed on Brexit talks said the issue of the Irish backstop was also close to being settled, the newpaper said.

The Northern Irish party that British Prime Minister Theresa May's government relies on for support says it will consider backing a vote of no-confidence if May agrees to European Union checks on goods entering the region post-Brexit.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, Environment Secretary Michael Gove and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox are reported to have expressed their discontent in the meeting on Thursday.

The DUP has threatened to withdraw its support for the government if it is not happy with the final Brexit deal.

"Despite the so-called deal planning, the Government has yet to admit that a no deal would require a raft of substantial legislation to be rushed through Parliament, crucial stop gap agreements with the European Union on matter relating to Northern Ireland and security, and the recruitment of thousands of custom officials".

"He told the BBC's Political Thinking podcast: "'Their behaviour was pretty intolerable, but not almost as intolerable as the way the present Prime Minister is being treated".

Earlier, asked several times if she backed Mrs May's approach, set out in a White Paper in July, Ms McVey told the BBC: "I am completely supportive of the prime minister as she well knows, what I won't do even for you right now is speculate".

"It does appear possible there will be a breakthrough", he said, insisting: "Certainly the way to do this [solve Irish border problem] is being prepared this week and most likely will be presented next week".

While the United Kingdom will effectively stay in the single market and customs union during the transition period up to December 2020, Brexiteers fear the new proposal would keep the United Kingdom in the customs union for years thereafter until a full trade deal could be agreed with the EU27.

The party, who are in a confidence and supply agreement to prop up Mrs May's Conservative Government, have said they are willing to vote against the government if betrayed on the Brexit deal.

As part of a divorce deal, the UK and EU are seeking a fallback agreement to avert a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, should a future EU-UK trade agreement not prevent this.

In what was interpreted as a warning shot against the government, DUP lawmakers on Wednesday failed to back the government in voting against an amendment to an Agriculture Bill.

"Many of her cabinet colleagues have assured me of their unionism", she said.

Penny Mordaunt, the worldwide development secretary, and Esther McVey, the work and pensions secretary, and Andrea Leadsom have the most significant concerns over the plans, although they did not attend last night's meeting.
