PlayStation announce when you'll be able to change your PSN ID

Revealed on the PlayStation Blog, the PSN Online ID Change feature beta will initially be a part of their PlayStation Preview Program and "will become available to select users that have pre-registered as testers for previous PS4 system software betas". The testing phase is slated to wrap up in November.

PlayStation have officially confirmed that the ability to change your PSN username is coming, after years of demand. Sony will allow you to display both IDs at the same time so your friends will know you made a change and don't get confused. However, unlike the previous setting, this option is only available while applying the change and not after. Once you decide to display your old ID or not, you won't be able to adjust this after completing the online ID change process. Subsequent changes will cost £7.99/$9.99, or £3.99/$4.99 if you have PlayStation Plus.

The rumor that PlayStation was making this long-awaited change surfaced earlier this month, when developers hinted they'd been told to prepare for the change. Changing your PSN name is compatible with games published after April 1, 2018, as well as some of PS4's "most-played" titles to date.

KitGuru Says: I've been wanting to change my name for quite some time after my online moniker was inexplicably denied. However, the full name change feature is due to launch in early 2019.

There hasn't been a way to change your PSN ID since the PlayStation Network was launched in 2006. There will be a way to fix these problems, but you may not like it. Once decided, you won't be able to switch between showing/not showing your old ID. If that happens, you can revert back to your original ID for free at any time (this can only be done once during the preview program).

Microsoft would in fact charge Xbox Live users a fee to change their name, which many players obliged to, but Sony were still reluctant.
