According to local authorities, four people were killed in and around the town of Gros-Morne in the south - including a woman who died from a heart attack suffered after the quake.

The country's civil protection agency said that at least seven people died in the coastal city of Port-de-Paix and three people died in the nearby community of Gros-Morne in the province of Artibonite.

The tremor was felt in the capital Port-de-Prince, sparking emotion among residents still shell-shocked from the massive 2010 natural disaster that left at least 200,000 people dead and 300,000 more wounded.

Homes and a hospital were also reported to have been destroyed by the natural disaster.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the aftershock was located 9.8 miles (15.8 kilometers) north-northwest of Port-de-Paix.

Reportedly, the damage was concentrated in the northwest region of the island, with two minor aftershocks were also felt thereafter.

The Haitian Civil Protection Agency said early on Sunday that at least 135 people were being treated for injuries.

Two teams of Cuban doctors left for Haiti Sunday morning to attend to the victims of the country's 5.9 magnitude quake that took place on Saturday.

The quake was one of the strongest to hit Haiti since a 7.0-magnitude quake struck near the capital, Port-au-Prince, in 2010, killing thousands of people in the impoverished Caribbean country.

Among the dead from Saturday night's quake were a 5-year-old boy crushed by his collapsing house and a man killed in a falling auditorium. In Gros-Morne, one bed was covered in rubble, while the exterior walls of some homes were visibly cracked.

In 2010, a 7.1 magnitude quake rocked the country, killing between 200,000 and 300,000 people, according to estimates.

"The house can fall at any time", he said.

Among the damaged buildings was a church in the northern town of Plaisance, the agency said.

Rescue workers reported the collapse of part of a hospital and an auditorium as the quake hit on a rainy evening.
