Melania Trump kicks off Africa tour in Ghana

Whereas yesterday, she was all smiles (really the happiest we've seen her in months), on Wednesday she appeared appropriately somber as she toured Cape Coast Castle, an old slave trading outpost.

She walked through the dungeons where thousands of Africans were held in captivity.

While speaking about her experience on Wednesday, the first lady said she was "very emotional" during her visit to the historic site, and described it as something she would "never forget".

Mrs. Trump's final event of the first day in Africa was a private tea with Ghanaian first lady Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House, the presidential palace.

Trump and Akufo-Addo met at the U.N. General Assembly last week, where Mrs. Trump announced which countries she would visit on her Africa trip, her first major solo trip as first lady.

The former model did not make a speech but those who met her said afterwards that unlike her mysterious public image she was "warm" and "gentle" in the flesh.

Mrs. Trump told reporters on the trip "this is a very special place". It's hard to forget, mostly because of that less-than-subtle message scrawled across the back: "I really don't care do u?"

After Donald Trump's derogatory comment, his wife Melania visits Africa

Mrs. Trump on her arrival visited the Greater Accra Regional hospital and donated items to the hospital.

Trump laid a wreath near the "Door of No Return", which leads to the ocean.

But for Melania Trump, "you wouldn't know about it unless you were following the news", he said.

Mothers at the hospital for her visit received gifts of teddy bears nestled in white baby blankets, personally handed out by the first lady, according to her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham.

Melania will also visit Malawi and Egypt.

First lady Trump was given a demonstration of how the hospital weighs babies during wellness checks in a sack-and-pully system.

The first lady's office has said the tour will be a "diplomatic and humanitarian visit" that will focus on her #BeBest campaign for "children and their well-being".

NAFTA REBOOT FOR DUMMIES: How does new trade impact Canadians?
The new agreement does not resolve the 25 percent tariff on Canadian steel imports that Trump imposed earlier this year. But President Perrin Beatty said the details of the text needed a closer look before a final verdict could be rendered.
