Even with Sunday's disappointing result, del Potro's performance in New York City was laudatory given what the Argentinian has gone through since his triumph at the US Open in 2009.

That put the 29-year-old Argentine back in a Grand Slam final for the first time since his breakthrough nine years ago, a comeback for a guy who had four wrist operations in the interim.

To his credit, Del Potro rallied again to recover a break in the third set, but Djokovic was simply too good and sealed the match with a smash before collapsing in delight.

Williams was fined £13,000 for her meltdown during he US Open final defeat to Naomi Osaka, which saw her issued with three code violations, including a game penalty after calling Ramos a "thief" for docking her a point.

Never was that more apparent than the game that stood out on this evening, with Djokovic serving while down 4-3 in the second set. Djokovic sprinted into a 3-1 lead in the third set before a battling Del Potro clung on, hitting back for 3-3.

Djokovic is now level on 14 grand-slam titles with Pete Sampras and, in men's terms, behind only Rafael Nadal on 17 and Roger Federer's 20.

Coming after his triumphant return at Wimbledon in July, the latest success is evidence enough that technically, tactically and physically Djokovic is back to his best.

"Pete Sampras is one of the biggest legends ever to play the game", Djokovic said.

Evacuations Ordered as Hurricane Florence Becomes Category 4 Storm
The first effects are already being seen - rip currents have hit beaches, causing seawater to flow over a state highway. The center says the storm is moving west at 13 miles per hour, and has maximum sustained winds near 130 miles per hour.

Djokovic, who climbed Mont Sainte-Victoire in the south of France with wife Jelena, added: "I strongly recommend you to climb it".

It comes seven years after the New York Times revealed top chair umpires were skipping the US Open because of how poorly it paid officials.

In the post-match ceremony, Osaka said to Serena: "I'm really grateful I was able to play with you".

Djokovic, the 2011 and 2015 US Open champion, largely controlled proceedings in a high-quality final.

Djokovic said: "If you told me in February this year when I got the surgery that I'll win Wimbledon, US Open, and Cincinnati (becoming the first man to win all the Masters titles), it would be hard to believe". Ahead of the final, Del Potro had fired 68 aces during the tournament, winning 82 percent of his first serve points. "But for me, I felt like I really had to focus during this match because she's such a great champion, and I know that she can come back from any point. I'm very motivated to keep trying to win these titles". But I was playing at the limit all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn't make them because Novak was there every time. He finished with a flourish, taking the last three games.

It was the ninth consecutive slam semi-final that the 31-year-old has won and sends him through to a 23rd final.

"When I had my surgery I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through", Djokovic said after the win.

Four easy holds later and it was onto a tiebreaker that decided the second set, and ultimately the course of the match as Djokovic capitalised on several bad errors from his opponent to win it 7-4.
