Fire Train Takes on Delta Fire in California's Shasta County

About a dozen large wildfires are burning in California. But the interstate was expected to open Sunday.

The fire was initially reported in the Lakehead area, 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of the state capital Sacramento and at the heart of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest around midday on Wednesday.

California accounts for 10 percent of all the acreage burned in the US since 2000, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Hard Closure Information: The Delta Fire is zero percent contained and still poses a very real threat to citizens and Interstate 5.

She says the blaze has destroyed thousands of trees that could fall onto the roadway.

The unrelenting flames have drained California's firefighting budget and prompted almost $1 billion in property claims even before the start of the risky fall fire season, officials said Thursday.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has responded to 4,587 fires that have destroyed 613,710 acres (248,359 hectares), compared with 4,425 fires that destroyed 233,936 acres (94,671 hectares) through the same period in 2017, according to figures from the agency.

"I've been delayed a day and a half already", said one trucker.

"It's not in the middle of a town, but there are some rural residences" in the area, Shasta-Trinity National Forest spokeswoman Carol Underhill said. The truckers are exhausted and just want to get going.

Officials initially ordered evacuations for everyone adjacent to I-5 north of Lakehead all the way to the Siskiyou County border as the fire grew from 50 to 500 acres Wednesday afternoon.

"You can't underestimate the value of our people getting the opportunity to go over there and practice those skills on these large incidents and bring those skills home for us in the future".

For the city of Dunsmuir, it's just an evacuation warning, which means residents don't have to leave yet - but should be ready to, just in case. A temporary flight restriction continues to be in effect over the fire area.

Fire officials said in a statement that crews were setting dozer lines and backfires to protect Highland Springs, north of Boulder Creek, as well as Castella and Dunsmuir farther north.

A representative from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office could no immediately be reached for comment.
