Ayanna Pressley defeats Dem Rep. Michael Capuano in upset primary victory

In a political stunner, incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano lost Tuesday's primary to Ayanna Pressley, a Boston city councillor who is virtually assured of becoming the first black woman to serve MA in Congress. She and Ocasio-Cortez both defeated older, white congressmen who were reliable liberal votes, but who didn't look like many voters in their districts.

Her campaign slogan - "Change Can't Wait" - connected the Democratic optimism of the early Barack Obama years to the urgency of Donald Trump's presidency. "She will serve the district well in Congress".

Pressley defeated a similarly left-leaning incumbent, which could temper any potential discord around her arrival in Congress, said Joshua Dyck, a professor of political science at the University of MA at Lowell.

Diehl defeated John Kingston, a businessman who once tried to fund a third-party challenge to Trump, and Beth Lindstrom, who served in Republican Gov. Mitt Romney's administration.

She joins 28-year-old political newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from NY (whose opponent Joe Crowley was described in June as "the most powerful Democrat in Queens") in pulling off a stunning win ahead of November's federal elections.

Mr. Capuano conceded the race to Ms. Pressley on Tuesday night, though the Associated Press had yet to declare a victor in the race.

Progressive Democrat Ayanna Pressley defeated 10-term incumbent Michael Capuano in the MA primary on Tuesday. Pressley was endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez, and has been profiled in several news outlets.

Amatul-Wadud, a mother of seven who touted her support for "Medicare for All" legislation, stumbled with an admission that, in 2012, she voted for Republican Scott P. Brown over Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

The race between Capuano and Pressley was perhaps the most closely watched contest in MA, especially since Pressley drew comparisons to Ocasio-Cortez.

"Our president is a racist, misogynistic, truly empathy-bankrupt man", Pressley told supporters on Tuesday night. Ocasio-Cortez worked the late Sen.

Ayanna Pressley beat the incumbent, Michael Capuano, to stand in November's midterm election for a safe House seat where no Republican candidate is being put forward.
