Messi surprised by Ronaldo leaving Madrid

For the first time in 12 years, Lionel Messi isn't a contender to be Fifa's Player of the Year.

The Italian giants secured Ronaldo's services in a €100 million deal back in July, after the 33-year-old called time on nearly a decade in the Spanish capital.

The award was first introduced as the Federation Internationale de Football Association world player of the year prize (1991-2009), before becoming the Ballon d'Or (2010-15) and subsequently part of FIFA's "The Best" awards.

Messi, 31, was the runner-up in 2007 and 2008 before winning for the first time in 2009.

Real midfielder Luka Modric was named the World Cup 2018's player of the tournament as Croatia reached the final against France.

Modric picked up the honour last week following a terrific season in which he also helped Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League. While Luka Modric also won Champions League with Cristiano Ronaldo previous year, but he takes the cherry away with a phenomenal FIFA World Cup campaign with Croatia in France where he led his global side against France.

Barcelona have not won the Champions League since 2015 - largely due to the dominance of Real Madrid, who have claimed the trophy in the last three seasons.

Dutch anti-Islam lawmaker cancels blasphemous caricatures contest
Wilders in June announced plans to stage a cartoon competition in parliament later this year to draw the Prophet Mohammed. Physical depictions of Allah or the prophet, even positive ones, are considered blasphemous under Islam and are forbidden.

Former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to make it a hattrick in winning the Ballo d'Or.

Ronaldo left Madrid after the Champions League final win over Liverpool to join Juventus.

Salah's solo strike in Liverpool's Merseyside derby draw with Everton last December is counted as the standout from his 44 in all competitions for the Premier League side in 2017-18.

"It makes Juventus a clear favourite to win the Champions League due to the squad they had before and now with him on top".

Feels So Good: Luka Modric finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Norway and Lyon's Ada Hegenrberg, Dzsenifer Marozsan, of Germany and Lyon, and Marta, of Brazil and Orlando Pride, have been shortlisted for the women's prize.
