In a tragic incident, a portion of the arterial Majerhat bridge in the southern part of Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday trapping several people and vehicles under its debris.

According to reports, the bridge on Diamond Harbour Road collapsed at around 4.45 PM on Tuesday.

Fire brigade personnel engaged in the rescue work had earlier said 25 injured were pulled out from the rubble. The tragedy happened two years after the collapse of the under-construction Vivekanand flyover in Kolkata, in which over 20 people were killed.

Derek O'Brien, the ruling party, Trinamool Congress MP tweeted and termed the collapse as devastating. One more team is on the way. I heard that maintenance of the bridge is entrusted with the PWD and the railways. My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

In this case, her government seems to have ignored specific warnings about the precarious state of the Majerhat bridge. They are saying beautification of the city is on, but fix work of old constructions is not on her mind.

"They have been admitted at a private hospital while nine others were admitted at the SSKM Hospital with severe injuries", a senior police officer said.

A massive rescue operation is underway to save people trapped in the debris.

"Our main priority is to conduct the rescue operation properly", Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said. "Some construction workers rescued at least five persons".
