The most pivotal part of Roger Federer's U.S. Open victory over Nick Kyrgios, both men agreed, came all of 17 minutes in, when the 20-time major champion was serving at 3-all, love-40 and got out of the jam.

Roger Federer breezed past Nick Kyrgios in the third round of the US Open, and in the process, punished his Australian opponent with one of the most astonishing winners of his career.

Kyrgios fought back to hold serve and win the game, but Federer went on to close out his victory in straight sets, 7-5.

"I take one of those points, the match is wide open", Kyrgios said.

Federer, who is seeded second at Flushing Meadows, admitted that it was one of the best shots of his career. "Clearly when you play that way and you lose, it's always, like, you feel like he's so much to blame, but that's just how he plays", said Federer.

Millman's victory vaulted him into the second week of a major for the first time.

Federer advances to play Australia's John Millman in the fourth round, and beyond that looms a potential quarterfinal matchup with sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic, who made quick work of Richard Gasquet, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3, on Saturday night. On the fourth, Federer snapped off a forehand victor.

Kyrgios started as the entertainer but it was now Federer putting on the show, the 20-times major victor flicking a sublime backhand victor then rifling a forehand cross court to charge to 5-0 before seizing a two-sets-to-love lead with his 10th ace. Federer then bested the tricky Benoit Paire 7-5 6-4 6-4, in a performance that was more workman-like than it was clinical.

"To play fair and play tough", said Federer on Saturday when asked what he can offer to young players. I couldn't have done much today. There he beat Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4 4-6 6-1 6-3 to claim his place in the second week.

"I knew how important that first set was", he said.
