Created by its subsidiary HiSilicon, the Kirin 980 is also the first-ever chip to be built on the 7nm process node, with the technology in question coming from TSMC. This solution designates the large high-performance cores to handle immediate, intensive workloads; the large, high-efficiency cores to provide sustained performance; and ultra-efficiency cores to tackle every day, light activities with extreme power efficiency.

It's been less than six months since the release of the P20 series, but Huawei is already planning it's next big thing, the Mate 20 which is launching in London on October 16. Huawei, on the other hand, announced the world's first 7nm Kirin 980 AI mobile chipset, Amazon Alexa-powered AI Cube smart speaker that is also a 4G router.

The Mate 20 Lite will be powered by Huawei's midrange Kirin 710 chip, as opposed to the supremely powerful Kirin 980 - the first of its kind for a 7nm chip - shown off by the company earlier today. That's largely reflected in the new processor's image-recognition capabilities. The problem of scheduling that will result from three separate core clusters on the Kirin 980 will be managed by a new flexible scheduler.

It's also the first SoC to include Cortex-A76 cores and it has a Mali-G76 GPU. This means a faster phone with better battery life, but also quicker app launch times, better multi-tasking and a generally smoother user experience.

For better optics, Huawei integrated its proprietary fourth-generation ISP into the SoC.

Motion tracking also gets a boost, with the ISP able to recognise a moving subject with 97.4 per cent accuracy. The Kirin 980 adopts a new pipeline dedicated to processing video captures, allowing the camera module to shoot videos with 33 per cent shorter delay. As seen with Huawei in recent times, the Kirin 980 boasts of numerous Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities.

While the Kirin 980 is not a 5G chip, it's the first in the world to have a mode with LTE Category 21 support, thus being capable of delivering 1.4Gbps download speeds when connected to the right infrastructure.
