Cuomo, Nixon exchange blows in tense primary debate

NY gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon's campaign team claimed it's sexist for incumbent opponent Andrew Cuomo to demand the two debate in a colder room when they meet on Long Island on Wednesday.

"As soon as you do", Cuomo said back, before moving forward to finish answering the question.

Cuomo is the heavy favorite to win a third term in the September 13 primary against political newcomer Nixon, who trails Cuomo in every public poll, according to The Washington Post.

"Can you stop lying?", Nixon retorted.

But her feisty campaign has garnered high profile attention and finally drew Cuomo into a live debate at Hofstra University on Long Island. But Nixon's senior campaign strategist said she is offering the types of solutions that Democratic voters are asking for.

Over the next hour, the governor surprised Nixon by going negative, ripping into his challenger as a phony who concealed her tax records (she has not) and would run the state into debt-driven chaos.

"I am a person", said Nixon, to applause.

Cuomo, who is seeking his third term as New York Governor, pledged not to run for President against Donald Trump in 2020, instead pledging to serve four full years as governor, if re-elected.

The governor then said the fact is the subway system was owned by New York City. Asked about making it easier for workers to strike, Nixon said that she meant to empower people who simply wanted fair wages and saw no other resort.

At one point, moderator Marcia Kramer told Nixon her time was up. The current governor has a long record of government service and had raised almost 50 times more money than Nixon, according to financial disclosures filed last month. "CBS was very frank with us that they really didn't have a choice - that these were his demands and if they were not acceded to, he wouldn't show up", Ms. Nixon said this month.

Nixon disagreed, responding, "You stood up to him about as well as he stood up to Putin".
