The couple was indicted Tuesday for misusing more than $250,000 in campaign cash for personal use, including personal vacations, groceries, alcohol and dental work.

When he was asked about the charges against his wife by Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum on Thursday, Hunter declined to defend her, saying, "whatever she did, that'll be looked at too, I'm sure, but I didn't do it. Because I'm gone five days a week, I'm home for two".

'I'm not concerned, but I think it shows Hunter is concerned, ' Campa-Najjar told Fox News, discussing the actions of a relative he has never met.

"This day we all expected to come finally got here", said protester Kathy Stadler, 45, of San Diego.

But Hunter said that the trips flagged by the Justice Department as personal vacations paid for with campaign funds "were fundraisers", and that he and his wife are innocent of the accused wrongdoing.

Campa-Najjar said he was hopeful of breaking the Hunter family's almost 40-year hold on the district that runs largely east of coastal San Diego, abutting Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base and stretching to a remote section of U.S. -Mexico border.

He also spent $238 in December 2013 while watching a San Diego Chargers game at a Washington-area restaurant with another unnamed congressman, the indictment alleges.

The tempo was very good. "I think we live one unbelievable season last season, there was cameras, we do it for ourselves". I don't think its right that City have dragged up interviews with Jose and De Bruyne, obviously that was a mistake.

Chris Wilmot, 47, a Republican and longtime Hunter supporter, said he was rethinking the race.

Hunter said prosecutors edited text messages defending himself over allegations that his wife suggested he list a pair of shorts for himself as "some [golf] balls for the Wounded Warriors."

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) said Hunter would be removed from his committee assignments pending resolution of the case.

The Hunters were indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury in San Diego on charges of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, wire fraud, falsification of records and prohibited use of campaign contributions. "That's how people get to hear me and hear what I have to say".

He referred to an outside audit that he said he commissioned past year and resulted in his paying back more than $60,000.

His top aide previously acknowledged the congressman's teenage son accidentally used a campaign credit card to make purchases on the video game platform, Steam. "They overdrew their bank account more than 1,100 times in a seven-year period resulting in approximately $37,761 in "overdraft" and "insufficient funds" bank fees".

"By virtue of these delinquencies - as well as notifications of outstanding debts and overdue payments from their children's school, their family dentist, and other creditors - the Hunters knew that many of their desired purchases could only be made by using campaign funds", according to the federal indictment.
