"EAM @SushmaSwaraj met with former President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai and leaders talked about great role played by former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee in consolidating democracy in Afghanistan", the MEA spokesperson tweeted.

The funeral of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be held at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal in Delhi today at 4 pm.

He was also one of the founding members of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which now governs India.

Chief Secretary Pandey told The Indian Express that the government is also finalising the nature of four memorials - in his birthplace, Bateshwar in Agra; in Kanpur, where he pursued higher studies; in Balrampur, from where he was elected to Lok Sabha for the first time and in Lucknow, which he represented five times in Parliament. "We are here to share your grief and pay our condolences on the behalf of people of Pakistan and the Government of Pakistan", Pakistan law minister Ali Zafar told ANI.

"The demise of such a great leader is a great loss not only to India but also to Japan and other parts of Asia as well as the entire global community". Heavy security was deployed along the route of the procession. Vajpayee was undergoing a treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for the past 9 weeks.

This was a silent gesture of PM Modi to show how much he loved and respected BJP stalwart AB Vajpayee.

He further said that by creating peace between the two countries, "we can truly recognise the service of Vajpayee". Khan said in a statement that Vajpayee was a prominent political personality of the sub-continent and his death has created a big void.

Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli extended condolences, and said that in Vajpayee's death, Nepal had lost a "true friend and well-wisher".

Vajpayee served as prime minister three times between 1996 and 2004 and was instrumental in making India a global nuclear power. "He will be remembered as a politician who made a major personal contribution to the friendly relations and privileged strategic partnership between our countries".
