Mild West Nile symptoms include fever, headaches and muscle fatigue.

"Controlling an epidemic of WNV infection is a community effort that calls upon residents to take preventative measures to reduce exposure", Ganesh Shivaramaiyer, DCHHS' interim director, said.

The state only had four cases until then, but reported 14 positive cases last week. The first probable case of the virus in 2018 was reported in Allegheny County in late July.

People older than 50 are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

DCHHS recommends that Dallas County residents use an insect repellent containing DEET whenever they go outside, and that they dress in long, loose and light-colored clothing.
