VP Pence Rallies Support for US Space Force

Vice President Mike Pence announced Thursday that the Pentagon has begun planning to create a Space Force, embarking on an effort to create the first new armed service since 1947.

"This new command structure for the physical domain of space led by a four-star flag officer will establish unified command and control for our space force operations, ensure integration across the military, and develop the war fighting doctrine tactics and techniques of the future", said Pence.

"What was once peaceful and uncontested is now crowded and adversarial", said Pence.

The Trump Administration outlined a plan to make a "Space Force" the sixth branch of the USA military Thursday, but there are still significant hurdles before it could become a reality. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said in a memo previous year to Senator John McCain, a Republican from Arizona, that he opposed "the creation of a new military service and additional organisational layers at a time when we are focused on reducing overhead and integrating joint warfighting functions".

One of the key functions of the new branch would be to aid U.S. forces on the ground and the air force, giving them combat superiority.

"We are glad that the Pentagon is finally taking these steps in enhancing our space strength", Reps.

"There is a threat out there but it's being handled by the U.S. Air Force today".

"Recently our adversaries have been working to bring new weapons of war into space itself", Pence said. We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force - separate but equal.

The report lays out four steps that it will take to start the reorganization the military with a goal of creating a fully independent Space Force within a few years, depending on how quickly Congress moves to pass legislation.

"President Trump and I are grateful to Secretary Mattis for this department's diligence in preparing this report, and our administration will soon take action to implement these recommendations, with the objective of establishing the United States Department of the Space Force by 2020", he said.

But Trump has continued to push for a Space Force, so the idea may well become reality before long. "Space is essential to the nation's security and prosperity".

"The Space Force will not be built from scratch", Pence said during his speech.

The Space Force, however, would still need Congressional approval before any of these plans are set into motion.

Pence acknowledged that creating a new branch "is not simple process". A Department of the Space Force would likely have similar responsibilities to the other services, which is to train and equip their service members for military operations around the globe that are controlled by combatant commands.

"Peace only comes through strength", Pence said.

Deborah James, who served as Air Force secretary for the final three years of the Obama administration, estimated it would be five to 10 years before a separate service would be fully formed.

The Pentagon's existing military branches are: the Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Army and Air Force.
