Tamil Veteran Politician Karunanidhi Passed Away

"Being a member of the state Legislative Assembly 13 times since 1957 from seven different constituencies and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five times speaks for his deep connect with and influence over the people of the state", Naidu said in his message. "All the government offices, schools, and colleges will be closed tomorrow", read the govt statement.

On July 26, Kauvery Hospital said Karunanidhi was being treated for fever due to urinary tract infection with intravenous antibiotics and fluids at his home in Chennai. His father was a farmer in the village of Thirukuvalai in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to attend the funeral, tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Kalaignar Karunanidhi". Both were Karunanidhi's bitter foes in politics.

As his political career was taking off, Karunanidhi also became a popular screenwriter for Tamil films.

State opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala was among those who expressed grief over the death.

That art and politics blended seamlessly in Karunanidhi was manifest from the sobriquets of "Thalaivar" (The Leader) and "Kalaignar" (The Artist) he earned from ardent followers.

He was only 14 years old when he started participating in anti-Hindi agitations and similar political movements.

DMK cadres held impromptu protests and engaged in sloganeering demanding a place for Karunanidhi's burial at the Marina beach. His demise marks the end of an era in Tamil Nadu and India lost one of its worthiest sons, said Patnaik.

Karunanidhi penned screenplays and dialogues for over 50 movies.

He and Ms Jayalalithaa, who died in 2016, alternated as chief ministers over the past three decades in the state.

The same year he parted with 50% of the seats to the Congress in the Assembly elections but the alliance was not fruitful and MGR won.

A big crowd had been thronging the streets outside the hospital since his hospitalisation but it swelled to some 6,000 Tuesday, an AFP photographer estimated, after doctors said he had suffered a "significant decline".

Mr Karunanidhi is survived by his two wives and six children.
