Manafort's defense team had accused Gates of being the actual brains behind Manafort's alleged financial misdeeds in their opening statement less than 24 hours before.

Manafort attended a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians that is a focal point of Mueller's probe.

The charges all came about through the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election, led by former FBI chief Robert Mueller.

But the broader implications are unmistakable.

This courtroom sketch depicts Paul Manafort, fourth from right, standing with his lawyers in front of US district Judge T.S Ellis III, center rear, and the selected jury, seated left, during the jury selection of his trial at the Alexandria Federal Courthouse in Alexandria, Va., Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

Manafort ran Trump's campaign for five months in the spring of 2016.

It took until the second day of Paul Manafort's trial for the Judge T.S. Ellis III to dish out a rebuke, and it happened after Special Counsel Robert Mueller's prosecutors talked up the priciness of Manafort's suit collection.

The prosecution's suggestion that Gates might not testify emerged shortly before lunch on the second day of Manafort's trial, as Mueller's team questioned an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who conducted the raid on Manafort's Alexandria, Virginia, home in July of 2017. Some documents are necessary to show Manafort's connections with those consultants, prosecutors say. "Obviously, that's very risky for him".

Manafort was indicted along with Gates in Mueller's wide-ranging investigation, but he is the only American charged to opt for a trial instead of cooperating with the government. So far, 32 people and three companies have been charged by Mr Mueller. There are also four alternates, three women and a man.

He relied on a team of financial experts to keep track of the millions of dollars he earned from his Ukrainian political work and to ensure that that money was being properly reported, said attorney Thomas Zehnle.

USA economy records fastest growth since 2014
The economy will be supported by a $1.5-trillion tax cut package in 2018 and increased government spending in the last quarter. Forecasters expect healthy consumer spending in the second half of this year but a slower pace than in the spring.

Prosecutors also accuse him of lying to US banks to obtain real estate loans in a bid to maintain a lavish lifestyle after his client, former pro-Russia Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, fell from power in 2014 and the money stopped.

Lawyers have tangled over how much jurors will hear of his overseas political work, particularly about his ties to Russian Federation and other wealthy political figures.

Asonye said Manafort set up bank accounts in overseas countries and funnelled millions of dollars into them in order to bankroll an extravagant lifestyle.

Prosecutor Greg Andres argued that Manafort's spending was important to the case. Why didn't government tell me that he was under investigation. But the charges are unrelated to Manafort's involvement in Trump's presidential campaign.

The former Trump campaign head was ordered to jail by a judge on new charges that he was tampering with witnesses.

A United States appeals court in Washington today rejected Mr Manafort's request to be released.

Defense lawyers also sought to address head-on Manafort's wealth and the images of a gaudy lifestyle that jurors are expected to see.

Wall added that it was unusual for customers of House of Bijan to pay with wire transfers, especially from foreign bank accounts, as Manafort regularly did.

Prosecutors say they will introduce evidence that a chairman of one of the banks allowed Manafort to file inaccurate loan information in exchange for a role on the Republican campaign and the promise of a job in the Trump administration that never materialized.
