Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly closed his deal to play The Joker in a standalone Warner Bros. film, which now has the greenlight to start production in September, per THR.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the standalone film was picked up by Warner Bros. and will begin filming in NY this September with Phoenix playing Batman's arch-nemesis.

There is speculation that it will also have a quick turnaround and may be in cinemas as early as late 2019.

The Joker movie has been a bit of an enigma amongst DC Comics fans, ever since it was first announced in September of a year ago.

The new movie will find Phoenix following in the Joker footsteps of Jared Leto, Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson.

Joaquin Phoenix is officially stepping into the purple suit of Batman's greatest foe. Leto's Joker is expected to take place in the world of Justice League and Suicide Squad.

Under the direction of Todd Phillips (The Hangover franchise), the new film centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen.

As such, the film is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content than previous DC comic book films, Variety adds. Martin Scorsese was once even attached to produce, and Warner Bros. was eyeing his frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio for the role.

No release date has been set and it's expected to have a budget in the $55 million range.
