Hours after a gunman blasted his way inside The Capital Gazette on Thursday, the surviving staff tweeted out their defiance: "Tomorrow, this Capital page will return to its steady objective of offering readers informed opinion about the world around them". The letter was dated 28 June - the day of the deadly attack.

Trump created a furor this week when the White House declined a request from Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley to fly US flags at half-staff, similar to orders the president issued after other mass shootings, including the school massacre in Parkland, Florida.

In one tweet, Ramos wrote he wanted to see the paper, the Capitol Gazette in Annapolis, stop publishing but said it "would be nicer" to see two particular journalists "cease breathing".

Buckley said he ordered the city's American flags lowered immediately.

The victims, all employees of the newspaper, have since been identified as Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Wendi Winters and Rebecca Smith. He had a long, acrimonious history with the newspaper, including a lawsuit and years of harassment of its journalists.

On Friday, a judge ordered that Ramos, 38, remain in custody and be held without bond on five counts of murder as Ramos appeared via a video feed from a detention center.

Marquardt said he once slept with a baseball bat by his bed because he was so anxious about Ramos. Signed by Ramos, the document is styled as a "Motion for Reconsideration" by Maryland's top court, which in 2016 refused to hear a defamation case Ramos filed against the Capital, police say.

In his proclamation, Mr Trump ordered all flags at public buildings, military posts, naval vessels and embassies to be flown at half-mast until sunset on Tuesday. They sought solace with laughter and amusing memories, but sobs occasionally punctuated the ceremony.

"He was six five so it made sense, but also he had a really, really big heart", she said, before reading a poem in her dad's honor. But it wasn't just his height that made the nickname ring true to those who knew him best.

Brennan McCarthy, who was the attorney for the woman who was cyber-stalked for six years by Ramos, said Ramos was the most disturbing man he had encountered in years of practicing family and criminal law, and that he feared for the safety of his family and client.
