First lady Melania Trump was expected to visit immigration centres Thursday housing migrants apprehended at the U.S. -Mexico border.

On her first visit on June 21, she was castigated for boarding her aircraft en route to meet children at the US-Mexico border in Texas wearing a US$39 Zara jacket emblazoned with the words "I really don't care".

Instead, Trump wore white wide-legged palazzo trousers with black tuxedo-style stripes down the sides, an unadorned black knit top with three-quarter length sleeves and white tennis shoes when she arrived at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, shortly after 10 a.m. local time, when the temperature was over 90 degrees.

British figures involved in the planning "are keen to avoid a repeat of the Hamburg G20 gathering past year, when Melania was unable to leave her hotel due to protests", the paper adds.

Melania Trump also could visit a facility in Phoenix, according to another person familiar with her plans.

However, the first lady has not worn the jacket on her current trip. And I'm looking forward to our discussion and to tour the facility.

"I'm here to support you and give my help wherever I can", Trump said. "She thinks that it's important that children stay with their families".

Last week, Mrs. Trump met with officials who work with detained families in McAllen, Texas. Though Trump reversed the policy amid massive backlash from both parties, the fate of children now being held remains unclear.

"And if you try to scale the fence, believe me, they'd be even too happy to have you arrested and separated from your children", he said, as the crowd clapped.

Photos of children in cage-like detention centers has sparked public outrage, prompting President Trump to issue an executive order last week stopping the family separations.

The first lady asked several questions regarding the children: how many were there in the facility, what are their ages and how long do they typically stay in the facility. Her spokeswoman said it was just a jacket.

But Anita McBride, the chief of staff for former first lady Laura Bush, said Melania Trump was, of course, sending "a message".

It is understood Mr Trump's visit could last until July 15, although the exact date will be dependent on his planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. But others wondered if she was actually trolling her husband, sending a passive-aggressive message that she doesn't approve of his policy.

A White House official told NPR that Melania Trump pressed her husband to stop separating children from their parents.

Despite criticism for wearing a jacket saying, "I really don't care".

Activists said that Melania Trump was not welcome. She said, "It's incredible, as young as 6 years old, you know, someone would leave them".
