The newspaper is located in a four-storey office building in Annapolis, the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland. In a number of tweets, Capital Gazette reporter Phil Davis was reporting breaking news on Twitter of an attack in his own office.

A shooting at the Capital Gazette in Anne Arundel County, Maryland left five journalists dead and two others injured in what authorities are calling a "targeted attack".

Marc Limansky, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department, said officers were searching the building while trying to get everyone out safely.
