Joe's health had been ailing in recent weeks and he had reportedly been hospitalised with stage four pancreatic cancer in recent days.

He passed away early on Wednesday, according to TMZ.

Joe Jackson, patriarch of pop's most famous family, has died aged 89, U.S. media reports. His death comes just days after the family remembered Michael, whose death anniversary fell on 25 June.

"We were nervous rehearsing because he sat in the chair and he had this belt in his hand and if you didn't do it the right way, he would tear you up", Michael Jackson said about his father in a 2002 interview with United Kingdom journalist Martin Bashir.

Jackson's youngest child Janet, like Michael, would achieve superstar status as a solo artist.

He would later negotiate a deal for Janet with A&M Records, the company responsible for releasing the hit albums Control and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814. He then set his sights on helping his sons achieve success with their group, The Jackson Brothers - later changed to The Jackson 5. Five years ago he told interviewer Piers Morgan: "I'm glad I was tough, because look what I came out with".

The proud father and husband took to Twitter to announce wife Joanna had given birth to another bundle of joy. Chip said Joanna is "doing great", and their newborn has "10 lovely toes and 10 attractive fingers".

After his death, Rev Jesse Jackson paid tribute, tweeting: "Joe Jackson, brother beloved, patriarch & creator of one of the most talented American musical dynasties". "RIP to the king that made everything possible", Randy Jackson Jr. said.

Born July 26, 1928, Jackson initially worked in the steel mills of northwest Indiana.

Jackson himself even addressed his methods several times, such as when he told Oprah that he beat his children with a strap and doesn't regret it because "it kept them out of jail and kept them right". "It's hard raising nine kids, bringing them from IN out here.that was his whole thing, to wanting to keep his family together".

As his family members' profiles rose, Jackson's relationships with his wife and children increasingly suffered.

Prince Jackson, Michael Jackson's eldest son, posted a lovely picture of Joe with some of his grandchildren on Instagram. Janet, who at age 52 is still going strong on her State of the World Tour, balancing her career with being a mom to 1-year-old son Eissa.

The Jackson family was often riven by legal battles, jealousies, money disputes, Joe's philandering and allegations of child molestation against Michael, as well as Michael's eccentric lifestyle. He married Katherine Scruse (Katherine Jackson) in 1949, and the couple went on to have 10 children (Joe also has one child as the result of an extramarital affair).
