Kolarov screamer secures victory for Serbia

Aleksandar Kolarov curled in a superb freekick as Serbia beat Costa Rica 1-0 in a rather listless Group E match of the FIFA World Cup here on Sunday.

The local daily La Nacion headlined its digital edition with "Costa Rica loses 0-1 against Serbia and the illusion of qualifying for the second round in Russian Federation 2018 goes out", reports Xinhua news agency.

Costa Rica has only been able to grab two wins in their last 10 encounters and have not having the best time in the previous games. Serbia have an excellent squad but the fact that they have missed out on major tournaments in 2014 and 2016 may work against them this year.

The North Americans have some highly talented players in their ranks and the most prominent of them is none other than Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas.

The bullish Mitrovic failed to find the net with a good chance early in the second half, but it mattered little, as the deadlock was broken when AS Roma left back Kolarov produced his moment of magic, curling a free kick left-footed over the wall and past the despairing dive of Navas.

The team moves on to play Switzerland on Friday in Kaliningrad, and wraps up the group stage in Moscow against Brazil on June 27.

"We dedicate this win to our Director, and we want him to know that we are all supporting him", said Kolarov, referring to the 45-year-old Bunjevcevic, who assumed the post with the Serbian federation on August 2016.

House of Lords rejects UK PM May's Brexit plan on 'meaningful vote'
The amendment drawn by the United Kingdom government speaks of merely an advisory rather than a meaningful vote. Pro-EU Tories were quick to voice their anger.

"The Serbians did their homework very well", Costa Rica coach Oscar Ramirez said.

"I do feel really proud of the fact that I'm the first Costa Rican-born coach to lead our team at a World Cup".

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Serbia): Lazio's asking price just went up £10m. The first half is over at the Samara Arena with the scoreline 0-0.

Creaking veterans like Branislav Ivanovic, who can become Serbia's most capped player on Sunday with 104 worldwide appearances, and Aleksandar Kolarov will need to rediscover their heyday if Serbia are to keep opponents at bay in Russian Federation.

Costa Rica: Navas 6, Acosta 6, Gonzalez 6, Duarte 7, Borges 6, Calvo 7, Gamboa 6, Guzman 6, Ruiz 5, Venegas 5, Urena 5.

Now with Italian club Lazio, rumors have swirled that Manchester United might be interested in the dynamic 23-year-old Milinkovic-Savic..
