The CDC released a report showing suicides are up more than 30 percent in half of the states since 1999.

Suicide prevention largely focuses on addressing mental health treatment, the CDC found, suggesting that a wider variety of preventive measures could be taken.

Other factors include the crisis in the past or upcoming two weeks (29 percent), use of a substance (28 percent), physical health problems (22 percent), work or financial problems (16 percent), a criminal legal problem (9 percent), and loss of housing (4 percent).

Suicide rate increases ranged from just under 6 percent in DE to over 57 percent in North Dakota, the report said.

Most of the suicide victims in that age range were men. Firearms was the most common method used by both groups, followed by suffocation, poisoning and "other". "People are going to get help", Reidenberg said. She's urging the media to be careful with what they say. Publicity surrounding a suicide has been repeatedly and definitively linked to a subsequent increase in suicide, especially among young people. "We know that same approach can work with suicide". The latest data at that time showed about 30,000 suicides a year. "And so a report like this really draws attention to the fact that we need to do a whole lot more to prevent suicide, to save lives". KDADS also offers training regarding suicide prevention.
