And while many fans of Suicide Squad will be pleased to hear the news, the critical reception of Jared Leto's "The Joker" was polarizing, with some praising it, and others hating it.

Despite earning bad reviews, "Suicide Squad" (2016) made Warner Bros. nearly $747 million at the worldwide box office. This spinoff follows on the heels of the Margot Robbie-produced Birds of Prey feature that will star her Harley Quinn, and this film probably takes the spot that was rumored for a Joker/Harley film that kept being bantied about.

Leto's Joker, as fans noted, was nearly a glorified cameo in "Suicide Squad". Even then, it's entirely possible the film could come before Suicide Squad 2 - which does have a writer and director - should the studio opt to push Leto's Joker to the front of its schedule.

Want more stuff like this? Warner Bros. appears to be doubling down anyway. "I loved the Joker, he's a great character, a really fun character to play". One movie will be the origin story, while Jared Leto's will focus on the partly established character that we saw glimpses of during Suicide Squad.

Giving Leto this star vehicle, which he will also produce, seems like a reward for the success of a movie that he basically had an extended cameo in. Apparently, this required Leto to send his fellow actors a pig's head and used condoms, among other things.

The untitled standalone movie will see Leto serving as an executive producer in addition to his starring role.

One of the - many - overwhelming criticisms of the movie was Leto's lacklustre Joker, which, though little more than a glorified cameo, didn't quite measure up to the weird tales from the movie's set.
