United Nations chief calls on Israel, Iran to halt hostilities

Former Israeli deputy defense minister Ephraim Sneh told Business Insider that Israel targeted "the intelligence and the infrastructure" of Iran's forces in Syria, doing "heavy damage" which "will take time to fix". Merkel called for talks to be held in a broader format on Iran's ballistic missile programme and its regional activities - including in Syria and Yemen, her office said in a statement.

"We take Russia's interests into account, and we hope that Russian Federation will take into account our interests here in the Middle East", said Lieberman.

Israel said 20 rockets, either Fajr or Grad type, were fired from Syria at its forces in the occupied Golan Heights at around midnight.

Iran has not claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Israel blamed Iranian Quds forces inside Syria of firing the rockets. "This is part of a structural conflict unfolding between Israel and Iran in Syria".

"Targets belonging to the al-Quds Force and the Revolutionary Guard throughout Syria have taken a significant hit", said army spokesman Menalis.

Dozens of rockets were fired from Syria on the Israeli-occupied Golan overnight, a war monitor said, without confirming Israeli reports they were fired by Iranian forces.

It alleged the rockets followed a "first Israeli bombardment on the town of Baath" in Quneitra province.

Authorities urged the citizens of Golan Heights - the intended target of the rocket attacks - to be on alert while stressing that normal life would resume in the area. Damascus residents described explosions in the sky from air defence systems.

Hours later, Israeli rocket rockets targeted a military base in Kisweh, a commander in the pro-Syrian government regional alliance said. "In its initial stages, it would be Israeli air power against the long-range missile forces of Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah", the BBC continued.

Lieberman called the rocket fire "a new phase". "If we have rain, there will be a flood in them".

Israel's military later confirmed it had carried out the raids, saying some 70 military and intelligence targets had been struck and all of its aircraft had returned safely.

The senior officer said that "dozens" of Syrians anti-aicraft missiles were fired at the Israeli fighter jets, but no harm was done.

In the past, Israel has rarely commented on its military activity in Syria where it is believed to have conducted multiple sets of airstrikes against Iranian forces.

Iran also installed air-defense systems that can reach into Israel.

At the start his meeting with Putin, Netanyahu remarked on the commemoration of the Soviet Union's victory against Nazi Germany and compared the threat that Israel faces from Iran today.

Anna Borschchevskaya, an expert on Russian policy towards the Middle East for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, told JNS that Putin does not "really have an interest, nor ability, to restrain Iran".

"I presented Israel's obligation and right to defend itself against Iranian aggression, from Syrian territory", said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But unlike Russian Federation and Iran, Israel has done little to sway the outcome of Syria's civil war.

Iran, which often acts through proxies in Syria, similarly denied an Israeli claim in February that Tehran sent an armed drone from Syria into Israeli territory, where it was shot down.
