As Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met for the first time in Tokyo, the two countries, whose ties were strained for years over territorial and wartime issues, signed a range of cooperation agreements, covering areas such as investment, infrastructure-building and social security.

We also look forward to the meeting between the USA and North Korea and will be pleased to see a meeting between North Korea and Japan and hope it would resolve issues of interest to Japan.

Both leaders also spoke at length about bilateral issues.

Abe said, "North Korea has plenty of resources and a diligent labor force".

"The three countries will take leadership to achieve peace and prosperity in the Northeast Asia", Abe told a joint news conference in Tokyo, with Li and Moon standing on both sides, all wearing nearly identical blue neckties.

The two also agreed on the possibility of starting research activities regarding a railway project to connect their two countries, via North Korea, it said.

Moon and Li agreed that the worldwide community, including the United States, should actively take part in providing North Korea, in exchange for complete denuclearization, a guarantee of its security and support for its economic development, according to the South Korean presidential office.

North and South Korea are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a treaty.

The presidential office said Moon told the two Asian leaders that he had personally confirmed North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's goal of realizing complete denuclearization through the inter-Korean summit. He said that as major traders in the world, the three sides all support free trade and open markets.

Abe was scheduled to meet separately with Moon and Li later on May 9.

The pact, a decade in the making, also provides for regular meetings between defense officials and a mechanism for their naval vessels to communicate at sea to avert maritime incidents.
