Cowboys' Jason Witten retiring after 15 seasons to join MNF

This will be the second straight year that a Dallas Cowboy great is hanging up the cleats and taking their talents to the broadcast booth.

ESPN has reported that Witten plans to retire and become the lead analyst for "Monday Night Football". But that's the only case where the timing makes sense.

The NFL says Thursday's first round of the draft had the second-largest viewership ever for an opening night. Witten intends to meet with Cowboys owner/G.M.

Jerry Jones spoke about the conversation he and Jason Witten shared this afternoon. Rarely one to have to work off a script, Jones did this to begin a press conference introducing the Cowboys' first-round pick, linebacker Leighton Vander Esch.

The Jason Witten SCORE Foundation connects mentors with families suffering from domestic violence or abuse and established a domestic violence prevention program in 2010. I think we've really helped the front today, not just today with what we did with Connor. "I'll keep the details of those discussions private forever", Jones said. No decision has been made yet about is future, but it will be interesting to see how he does in the both.

The biggest wave to come from draft weekend for the Dallas Cowboys may not be any player selected inside their home stadium.

Despite the declining play, Dallas fans are saddened today by the news of Witten's retirement.

And the cupboard is almost empty at tight end. He now ranks 2nd all-time among National Football League tight ends in terms of receptions and receiving yards, trailing only Gonzalez. The latter two have no career stats. A person familiar with the trade said the 49ers dealt Brown and the 143rd overall draft pick to New England for the 95th overall pick. Jones did not address what he and Witten discussed and said the tight end still needed time to contemplate his future - "at least through the weekend".

He caught only two passes for 10 yards, but coach Jason Garrett called it his favorite Witten memory.

A third-round pick out of Tennessee in 2003, Witten has established himself as one of the premier tight ends in history during his 15 year stint in with the Cowboys. But unlike Romo, his replacement didn't ultimately force him out. Witten would retire as the franchise leader in receiving yards (12,448), receptions (1,152) and most consecutive games played (235).
